A project focused on developing an advanced 3D BIM workbench for FreeCAD, with an emphasis on high-performance core modules for architectural design.
An advanced 3D BIM workbench development project for FreeCAD, focused on building high-performance core modules for architectural design. The objective is to deliver an open-source BIM solution capable of competing with commercial platforms, while integrating GenAI technologies to automate design processes, perform clash detection, and optimize overall workflows.
The solution includes constraint-based 2D sketching with import/export support for DXF, DWG, and SVG formats, alongside robust BIM 3D modeling capabilities with full IFC-based interoperability. It enhances IFC processing, enables the creation of parametric BIM objects, and provides an intuitive user interface built with the Qt framework.
In addition, the platform supports a collaborative workflow using a Central/Local file model, featuring real-time synchronization, workset management, and advanced conflict detection. The project also integrates FEM (Finite Element Method) capabilities, enabling stress, deformation, and thermal analysis directly on 3D models—further strengthening its position as a comprehensive and high-performance BIM solution.
From a technology perspective, the system is built on the FreeCAD framework, leveraging Open CASCADE Technology (OCC 7.5+) as the core CAD kernel for geometric modeling. The user interface is developed using Qt5, PySide2, and Shiboken2, while OpenGL and Coin3D are utilized for high-performance 3D rendering. The platform also incorporates Boost libraries for system-level optimization, and integrates TensorFlow and scikit-learn to enable GenAI-driven functionalities.
For collaboration and scalability, the system employs WebSocket (C++/Python) for real-time communication and Protocol Buffers for efficient data serialization within the Workshare architecture, ensuring high performance, reliability, and seamless multi-user collaboration.
